Production processes within the fashion industry have led to staggering levels of waste and pollution, significantly affecting the environment on all counts. However, many firms have not yet opted for greener production alternatives, given their implementation complexity and the high costs involved.
An article published in 2022 by the Sustainable Production and Consumption magazine, titled Barriers to Sustainable Sourcing in the Apparel and Fashion Luxury Industry, details how consumer pressure to release new collections in short periods of time has made the implementation of sustainable operations more arduous. Additionally, given the speed at which fashion trends change, a significant number of textiles are left unused and later incinerated.
According to Lindenwood University (2024), several barriers exist to the adoption of environmentally responsible approaches in clothing production. One of the most common is the high cost associated with replacing existing machinery. Additionally, companies face logistical challenges, such as sourcing alternative materials or adapting labor requirements, which may involve employee training and other additional costs.
Another point worth mentioning is how certain firms refrain from making this transition, as they are unsure of its potential impact. Since they lack a mechanism to predict the outcomes of these changes, they refrain from doing so. Moreover, investors may not trust the reliability of alternative production methods, which may lead to reduced confidence.
That being said, the shift toward sustainability is a complicated process, as it involves structural, budget-related, and operational changes that can be difficult to apply. Brands must respond to consumer pressure to release new collections while facing the dilemma of whether to modify their production processes. However, this is not always a matter of choosing between consumer satisfaction and environmentally friendly practices. There are examples of companies that have achieved both, which we will explore in a future article.
